Skeletal Remains Found In New York Apartment Likely Belonged To Tenant's Mother, Police Say

New York police made a startling discovery in Brooklyn this week after receiving a 911 call about a foul smell.

Authorities entered a residence on 15th Avenue in the Borough Park neighborhood around 5 p.m. Monday and later uncovered skeletal remains in the apartment, according to WABC-TV. Investigators said they believe the corpse, hidden beneath piles of garbage, is the mother of the woman living in the apartment.

When police entered the residence Monday, the woman reportedly said she wanted to harm herself. After she was taken to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation, officers conducted a search of the apartment and found the skeletal remains, reports note.

The New York Post, citing law enforcement sources, identified the tenant as 28-year-old Chava Stirn. The woman had apparently shared the Borough Park apartment with her 61-year-old mother, Susie Rosenthal. Investigators said the woman may have lived with the corpse for up to a year, the outlet reports.

Long-time building tenant Amin Ashrafov described the odor as overpowering.

"I've never smelled something like that before," Ashrafov told DNAInfo New York.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
