Emotions were running high after Germany's 7-1 win over Brazil in Tuesday's World Cup semifinal. A Malaysian politician still managed to shock social media users with one very inappropriate tweet.
Malaysian MP Bung Mokhtar Radin tweeted his congratulations to the German soccer team with a toast to Adolf Hitler.
Bung, a member of parliament for the United Malays National Organization, one of Malaysia's largest parties, has long courted controversy. He was convicted for polygamy in 2010, and is known for a series of sexist comments.
While his reference to Adolf Hitler sparked outrage online, the MP hit back on Twitter with a string of equally insightful comments for his detractors, including "whatever," "get lost" and "say ot to ir mom" (sic).
Germany, however, did not appreciate Bung's twitter remarks. German Ambassador to Malaysia, Holger Michael, slammed the MP's allusion to the Nazi dictator, according to The Malay Mail Online. "While we appreciate the admiration for the German football team, we strongly reject the unacceptable allusion to the fascist regime of Adolf Hitler," the ambassador said in a statement.
Bung responded to the ambassador in Malay on Twitter: "He doesn't get it."
The controversial politician defended his controversial tweet to the press by arguing that "Hitler is part of history and the German team fought like how he did." That suggests Bung is the one who just doesn't get it.
