These Non-Curly Hair Products Just Rocked My Curly Hair World

Why Women With Curly Hair Should Use Products Not Made For Curly Hair

Choosing hair products can be a deeply personal matter. And with clever marketing, many of us have tunnel vision when it comes to reading labels.

Fine-haired girls flock to shampoos that help to boost volume while women with wavy hair seek serums that enhance their texture without adding frizz. And curly girls like myself tend to avoid straightening products altogether. But you shouldn't judge a hair product by its packaging.

I recently got my hands on Moroccanoil's new Smoothing collection. The product does not boast an impressive curl-specific formula, nor does it feature a photo of a woman with gorgeous locks. But it does have two key ingredients I love to use on my hair: coconut oil and argan oil. And it turns out these "non-curly" hair products worked some magic.

Here's what happened:

The Setup

I'd rather leave shampooing my hair to professionals, as I HATE the detangling process. But I took a leap of faith on a Sunday afternoon with these Moroccanoil products.
What I Looked Like Before...

After undoing a two-week old milkmaid braid, I was left with wavy yet limp hair that I teased out into an Afro.
Shampoo

It only took a quarter-size amount of shampoo to cleanse my hair and scalp. My curls appeared to really like the rich lather, and the argan oil created this heavenly scent that consumed my hair without being overly fragrant.
Conditioner

Ladies and gentleman, this is shrinkage. While my curls shriveled up quite a bit after two shampoos, I was surprised at how easy it was for me to detangle my hair with my fingers.
Mask

This stuff is the truth! It's thick and moisturizing thanks to argan butter and coconut derived-fatty acids. I applied this amount to my freshly washed and conditioned hair, put on a shower cap and allowed the mask to penetrate for 20 minutes.
Smoothing Lotion

While this product is recommended for easier blow drying, I don't blow dry or straighten my hair. However, I was reassured that I could also use the Smoothing Lotion to two-strand twist my hair while damp. Well, after twisting one section I realized that this couldn't work on its own. So I combined it with my favorite curly hair styling lotion of the moment , Miss Jessie's Multicultural Curls, for added definition.
Twisted Up

After styling my entire head into medium size twists, I covered it with a satin scarf to minimize breakage before heading to bed.
The Final Result

Unraveling my twists the next morning, I'm giving Solange vibes with my thick, curly Afro. My hair felt incredibly soft and my curls were springy and defined even on the most humid of days. Complements from strangers and co-workers were aplenty.

Rating: 4 out of 5. The Moroccanoil Smoothing Shampoo and Conditioner have convinced me that I CAN wash my own hair at home. However, the Smoothing Lotion won't stand alone as a curly hair styling product for my kinky texture.
