Emily Rios, star of FX series "The Bridge," recently announced she is gay in an interview at TCA’s FX day, according to AfterEllen.

“I’m gay, personally, so being Mexican and a lesbian — this is why I love the character because I deal with the same type of things with my own family,” Emily said.

The Mexican American star plays reporter Adriana Mendez on the show, who is also a lesbian.

Rios went on to talk about her personal experience being a Latina and coming out to her family:

Mexican-Americans especially — because this generation, we come into America and your family wants to be proud. You want to come to this country and say "This is what I have to show for it. I brought my family and we’re living our better life.’ For my family, my mom didn’t want me to live a difficult life. She brought me here for a better one so she’s like ‘Your coming out… I don’t want this to be this. I want you to be comfortable."

Rios wants to make sure her character's sexuality is treated as realistically as possible. "I want it to be an incidental thing, which is what happens in our everyday life," Rios said. "I wanted to make sure the whole lesbian aspect wasn’t this whole coming out story and the character wasn’t going to be made more flamboyant in any sort of way."

While the character's girlfriend, a nurse, had already been introduced in the first season, Emily said the audience will be getting more of the relationship during the second season of the show.

“You’re going to get more of that and her personal life, but it’s very simple,” the actress said. "You’ll catch them in their home, you’ll catch them possibly in the same bed, maybe kiss a little but it’s nothing major.”

The actress is also known for her role as recovering drug addict and mother, Andrea Cantillo, on "Breaking Bad." Her character was Jesse Pinkman's on-and-off love interest since she was introduced in season 3 of the hit AMC show.

"The Bridge" season 2 premiered on FX on July 9th.
