Let The Pirates Show You What Not To Do With The Bases Loaded (VIDEO)

The Pirates Blew A Huge Opportunity In Epic Fashion

The Pittsburgh Pirates made a huge mess out of a great situation.

With a few errant steps and a bad decision, the Pirates squandered a promising bases-loaded situation and potentially a chance to seal a win. Already leading the San Francisco Giants 5-4 in the top of the sixth inning on Wednesday, Pittsburgh catcher Chris Stewart drew a walk to load the bases with just one out.

Things looked good for Pittsburgh. Then it got weird.

Pittsburgh's Travis Snider, the base runner at second base before the walk was issued, was inexplicably caught wandering away from the bag toward third. Giants pitcher Jean Machi noticed and Snider was soon caught in a rundown between second and third. Just as Snider was about to get tagged out, Pittsburgh's Gabby Sanchez started running from third toward home plate. Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford tagged Snider out and then easily caught Sanchez in another rundown, leading to an unlikely double play.

San Francisco went on to score three late runs and win 7-5.

CORRECTION: A previous version of this story misstated that Gabby Sanchez advanced to third base on Chris Stewart's walk.
