How Colorado Towns Have Diverged On Marijuana Legalization

As part of the New York Times' Op-Doc series on marijuana, documentary filmmaker Elaine McMillion Sheldon traveled to Gunnison County, Colorado to explore how the state's new pot laws have been received since going into effect earlier this year.

Sheldon spoke to residents in two towns: Crested Butte, a small resort town that has positioned itself on the "bleeding edge" of legalization, and Gunnison, a farming community where sale of the substance has not yet been approved by the local government. Gunnison residents are poised to vote on whether to allow retail marijuana sales later this year.

"Now that marijuana is legalized in the state of Colorado, we can start having honest conversations about it," says Matthew Kuehlhorn, the project director of the Gunnison County Substance Abuse Prevention Project.
