Dramatic Flood Rescue Near Las Vegas Caught On Video

Dramatic Flood Rescue Caught On Video

A dramatic scene unfolded near Las Vegas on Monday when several vehicles became stuck in rising floodwaters.

Amateur photographer Doug Bennett was filming a Crown Victoria stuck in the water on Highway 95. The driver had escaped the vehicle, but as the waters rose, the car began to float toward a swamped Prius with an elderly couple trapped inside.

Bennett told FOX5 Las Vegas that a group of airmen from nearby Creech Air Force Base sprung into action to free the couple.

"It started out really slowly and then it was right on top of you," one of the airmen told KTNV. "As soon as we heard him yelling, the water was on top of us before we knew it."

While everyone in this video was ultimately rescued, others are not as fortunate. Floods kill more Americans than any other weather hazard, according to the National Weather Service, which notes that half of all flood deaths occur inside vehicles.

The National Weather Service has more tips on how to avoid getting caught in floodwaters on its "Turn Around, Don't Drown" website.
