Anyone who thought Tom Petty might actually back down after 38 years in the business thought wrong: The singer just notched his first No. 1 album.
Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers' "Hypnotic Eye" debuted on the Billboard 200's highest perch, selling 131,000 copies in its first week, based on Nielsen SoundScan tallies. That makes "Hypnotic Eye" Petty's most lucrative sales week since his 1994 solo album, "Wildflowers," which moved 161,000 copies right after Christmas.
Petty's victory comes despite the album's lead single, "American Dream Plan B," failing to chart on the Hot 100. Petty has released no videos in conjunction with the album, though he is currently touring and has made television appearances to promote the new music.
Debuting behind "Hypnotic Eye" are Eric Clapton & Friends' "The Breeze - An Appreciation Of JJ Cale," which sold 61,000, and the "Guardians of the Galaxy" soundtrack, at 60,000 copies. 5 Seconds of Summer fell from No. 1 to No. 4, while the "Frozen" soundtrack -- no, it still hasn't gone away -- dove from No. 2 to No. 6. Other debuts this week include Shawn Mendes' self-titled album (No. 5), Savages' "Theory of a Deadman" (No. 8) and Jenny Lewis' "Voyager (No. 9).
