'TMNT' Sequel Is Already In The Works

A sequel to "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" is in development, Paramount announced on Sunday morning. Michael Bay will again produce the film, which has a projected release date of June 3, 2016. Screenwriters Josh Appelbaum & André Nemec are set to write the script.

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" was a surprise box office smash and will rake in roughly $97.3 million worldwide, depending on Sunday's earnings. Going into the weekend, the film was expected to make between $50 and $55 million, but it performed much better than expected, prompting the announcement of a sequel. Surprisingly, it beat out "Guardians of the Galaxy," which dropped in its second week in theaters.

“Launching a new take on the 'Turtles' into the feature film world was a daunting task because as fans of them ourselves," Adam Goodman, Paramount's Film Group President said in a statement per Deadline.

"We felt a great responsibility to ensure audiences were going to experience everything they loved about the Turtles, while also getting to see them brought to life in a way they had never been seen before. The result exceeded our high expectations and the response to the film is beyond great, making it all the more fun to get started on the continuation of their story."
