Tom Emmer Wins Minnesota House Primary In Race To Succeed Michele Bachmann

Tom Emmer has won the Republican nomination to represent Minnesota's 6th District in the U.S. House, the Associated Press reports.

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) announced last May her intent to retire at the end of her term in Congress, opening up the field to represent the state's 6th District. Conservative radio host and former state Rep. Emmer and Anoka County Commissioner Rhonda Sivarajah jumped into the race for the Republican nomination. Emmer was regarded as the favorite ahead of the election.

Emmer narrowly lost the 2010 Minnesota governor's race to Democrat Mark Dayton. He came into the 2014 primary with name recognition from the 2010 race, in addition to endorsements from the Minnesota Republican Party and Bachmann.

The Democratic nominee, Joe Perske, ran unopposed for his party's nomination. Emmer will face Perske in the November general election.
