Who wants your skulls? Who needs your skulls?

Not this Austin Goodwill, that's for sure.

According to KVUE, police in Austin, Texas, are investigating after someone tried to donate a human skull to a local Goodwill store.

An employee at the store found what looked like a real human skull while sorting through donations on July 16. The Travis County Medical Examiner's Office determined it to be human remains from an adult, who may have died two years ago.

Sex and cause of death could not be determined. Police do not suspect foul play, but they would still like to speak with whomever donated it.

"We think it was probably something that belonged to the person who donated it, to a relative of the person who donated it and it was part of a collection or an anatomical model or something like that," said Detective Derek Israel with APD's Homicide Unit. He said it could have belonged to a student of medicine, dentistry or anthropology.

According to KSAT:

This is at least the fourth skull to be donated to the international nonprofit this summer. Three were donated in July to a Goodwill store in Bellevue, Washington.

“A skull, even a medical skull, is still human remains and needs to be treated with respect,” Kathy Taylor, a forensic anthropologist with the King County Medical Examiner’s Office told the Seattle Times after the Bellevue skulls were discovered. “So you shouldn’t throw them in the trash, you shouldn’t take them home and collect them, and you definitely shouldn’t give them to Goodwill.”

Anyone with information about the skull is asked to call the APD Homicide Unit at (512) 974-5210.
