Starting with Cole Hamels, four Philadelphia Phillies pitchers combined to throw a no-hitter on Monday against the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field. It was the 11th combined no-hitter ever in Major League Baseball.
Hamels struck out seven and walked five throughout six innings before relievers Jake Diekman and Ken Giles each pitched a frame. Closer Jonathan Papelbon retired all three batters face in the ninth inning to finish off Philadelphia's first ever combined no-hitter in franchise history.
While not allowing a hit through six innings, Hamels' pitch count reached 108 before Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg decided to pull him. Philadelphia's bullpen struck out five en route to the first combined no-no since the Seattle Mariners did so in June 2012. It was also the 12th no-hitter in Phillies history, per Philly.com.
"... One of the better experiences you can probably have in this sort of situation because it was a whole complete team effort. Most of the time when you see these sort of events it's one or two people, a great play," Hamels said after the game, via Ryan Lawrence of the Philadelphia Daily News. "This really took four outstanding pitchers to go out there, a good game called by Chooch and some big plays in the outfield with Marlon. It was a full team effort and I think we all can really enjoy it that much more for what it means for the organization."
Hamels also told reporters that the game ball will be given to team president David Montgomery, who recently took a leave of absence to recover from jaw bone cancer surgery.
