Public opinion on Ray Rice after Monday's TMZ video leak has been nearly unanimous: Rice should be banned from the NFL for life. Brutal video of Rice knocking his then-fiancee, Janay Palmer, unconscious and standing coldly over her slumped body inspired a flood of angry tweets and Facebook posts about the fired running back.
One domestic abuse survivor, however, told HuffPost Live's Marc Lamont Hill that Rice's suspension from the NFL, which could turn into a lifetime ban, does Janay Rice no good.
"By firing these players, you're simply punishing the victim yet again," said Ethlie Ann Vare, an author. "You are now throwing her husband out of work, making him one: angrier, and two: harming the household."
The incident happened back in February, and the NFL originally suspended Rice for two games, which sparked outrage throughout football circles. Back then, only video of Rice dragging his unconscious fiancee out of an elevator at the Atlantic City casino existed. After TMZ released the in-elevator video Monday, the Ravens cut Rice and the NFL suspended him indefinitely.
"This is not necessarily the right way to have a zero-tolerance policy in the NFL," Vare continued. "I absolutely disagree with the lifetime ban. Where does it aid the victim to throw her husband out of work? You're simply punishing the victim one more time."
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told CBS News on Tuesday that Rice will only be allowed back into the league if "we are fully confident that he is addressing this issue."
