Daniel Inouye Is The Senator Who Called Kirsten Gillibrand 'Chubby': The New York Times

Senator Who Called Gillibrand 'Chubby' Reportedly Revealed

The lawmaker who told Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) not to "lose too much weight now" because "I like my girls chubby" was the late Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii), the New York Times reports.

Gillibrand shared that eyebrow-raising story in her new book, "Off The Sidelines," also noting how she once had a male colleague in the Senate call her "porky" after the birth of her second child. Gillibrand has refused to name names, telling Time magazine, "It’s less important who they are than what they said.”

During an interview with HuffPost Live, Gililbrand opened up about other comments she's received about her weight, including a time someone told her she was "too fat" to be elected.

"I've just had a baby, I've just been appointed [to replace Hillary Clinton in the Senate], I have a lot to learn, so much on my plate, and this man basically says to me, 'You're too fat to be elected statewide,'" Gillibrand told HuffPost Live. "At that moment, if I could have just disappeared, I would have. If I could have just melted in tears, I would have. But I had to just sit there and talk to him. ... I didn't hear a word he said, but I wasn't in a place where I could tell him to go fuck himself."

The New York Times reports a spokesman for Gillibrand would neither confirm nor deny that Inouye was the one who called the New York senator "chubby." Read more from the NYT here.
