Colin Farrell & Vince Vaughn Cast As Leads In 'True Detective' Season 2

Here Are Your 'True Detective' Season 2 Leads

Just in from HBO: Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell have been cast as the leads in "True Detective" for Season 2. The HBO press release made no mention of the show's female lead, but did allow that "additional casting will be announced as it is confirmed."

The official announcement from HBO ends months of speculation about who would replace Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson on the show for its second season. Back in July, Deadline.com reported that Farrell was in talks for one of the main roles; in August, various trade reports attached Vaughn to the project as well.

HBO had remained tight-lipped on the stars' involvement, but Farrell was not as quiet. In a widely circulated interview with The Sunday World published on Sept. 20, Farrell said he was starring on "True Detective" for its second season.

"I know it will be eight episodes and take around four or five months to shoot," he said. "I know very little about it, but we're shooting in the environs of Los Angeles which is great. It means I get to stay at home and see the kids."

According to the HBO press release, this run of "True Detective" will focus on three police officers and a "career criminal" all of whom "must navigate a web of conspiracy in the aftermath of a murder." Farrell will reportedly play a character named Ray Velcoro, "a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn." Vaughn is apparently the career criminal, Frank Semyon, who is in "danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner."

Justin Lin, of "Fast and Furious" franchise fame, will direct the first two episodes. Series creator Nic Pizzolatto returns as writer.

As for the show's female lead, actresses such as Jessica Chastain, Elisabeth Moss and Rachel McAdams were once rumored for the role. According to TheWrap, Rosario Dawson, Brit Marling, Malin Akerman, Oona Chaplin, Kelly Reilly, Jamie Alexander and Jessica Biel are also in contention for the part.
