ESPN's Shelley Smith Announces She Has Breast Cancer

ESPN Reporter Announces She Has Breast Cancer

ESPN SportsCenter reporter Shelley Smith announced Wednesday she has breast cancer, declaring via Twitter, "I am strong and positive as I fight this."

Smith first began working for the sports network in 1993; she has also written for Sports Illustrated.

She made her announcement on the first day of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Other journalists who have fought the disease recently include "Good Morning America" co-anchor Amy Robach and former "Good Morning America" host Joan Lunden.

In a conversation with "Good Morning America's" Robin Roberts that was posted Wednesday at ESPNW, Smith is told by Roberts, who was diagnosed in 2007, to "fight" and to allow herself to be selfish. Check it out below.

Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly referred to Amy Robach as a former co-anchor on "Good Morning America." She is currently with the show.
