Democratic state Sen. Jack Hatch lost to Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad (R) Tuesday.
Branstad, who served from 1983 to 1999, is the nation's longest-serving governor. Hatch has served in the Iowa legislature as both a state representative and state senator for two decades.
