A high school senior in Missouri is being called a hero today, and not just because she recently enlisted in the National Guard.
Abby Snodgrass, 17, was shopping at a Walmart store in High Ridge, Missouri, on Wednesday, when she overheard a call for help nearby after an 11-month-old baby stopped breathing. The teenager responded by fleeing the dressing room she was in and running to the infant's horrified mother. Snodgrass started performing CPR amid a group of onlookers.
"I was terrified," she later acknowledged to KSDK. "I remember thinking as I'm doing the compressions, 'What if this doesn't work?' But I had to put it out of my mind."
Sodgrass only recently learned the life-saving technique thanks to a health class at Hillsboro High School, and everyone involved in the rescue can't be happier she did. The baby eventually started breathing again.
"I can’t explain how happy I was when she started to breathe," Snodgrass told ABC News.
Authorities told the outlet both the baby and the mother are doing well thanks to Snodgrass' quick thinking.
"We are exceedingly grateful to the young woman who helped our daughter," the baby's family said in a statement. "Our daughter is home and healthy, and we couldn't be more thankful."
