Kids Learn What It Really Takes To Feed A Family In This Grocery Store Experiment

Grocery Store Experiment Shows Kids The Real Challenges Of Trying To Feed A Family

Thanksgiving is not only a time to teach your kids about gratitude -- the food-centric holiday is also an opportunity to talk about hunger.

To raise awareness about hunger in the U.S., SheKnows Media gathered a group of preteens and issued a challenge: Go to the grocery store and buy enough food to feed one child for one week (21 meals), all on a budget of $36.50. The price amount comes from the USDA's Thrifty Food Plan, which says a family of four needs to spend at least $627 per month, or $146 per week on food.

In the video from the grocery store challenge, the kids learn what so many of us know to be true -- $36.50 is a tight budget for 21 meals, and it's much more expensive to feed your family nutritious meals than processed, unhealthy food.

To build more awareness and empathy in children, the challenge organizers have offered a workshop and discussion guide for parents and educators looking to teach their own kids about the social issue of hunger.

As this video shows, kids are capable of understanding a lot. And they are more than willing to lend a hand.
