What better way to surprise Santa this year than to leave out one cookie baked inside of another? He'll bite down on what he thinks is a normal sugar cookie and find a Milano inside. Or maybe he'll pop a chocolate chip cookie in his mouth and find a vanilla wafer. It's the best way to give back to Santa that we can think of.
Christmas cookies are one of the best parts of the holiday season -- you've got your shortbread cookies, your gingerbread cookies and your peppermint cookies, for starters. Then you've got your peanut blossom cookies and your thumbprints, of course. Let's also not forgot the store-bought classics we enjoy all year round but especially like to break out when we're home for the holidays and feeling especially nostalgic and gluttonous. We're talking Oreos, Nutter Butters and Thin Mints. There are almost too many cookies to consume over the holiday season. (Relax, we said almost.) This got us thinking: wouldn't it be awesome if you could combine cookies, so you could eat two at once and make space for even more cookies? Combining recipes isn't the right answer, however. That could get messy. Putting one cookie inside another one? Genius.
You may be familiar with the Oreo-stuffed chocolate chip cookie, which was then raised by the Super Stuffed Chocolate Chip Cookie, which housed an Oreo on top of a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup. In the Christmas spirit, we decided to go big on this theme and try out a bunch of cookie-stuffed cookies. We call them: Secret Santa Cookies.
We tried out some epic cookie-stuffed cookie combos to prepare for Santa's big night, and were simply delighted with the results. Not only did the cookies stay intact after baking, but they cut in half like a dream to expose a seriously stunning cross-section. The good news is that these cookies are much easier than you might expect. We used pre-made cookie dough from a tube (which is seriously good, if you're not already on board with it). If you can bake cookies from a tube, you can bake these secret Santa cookies.
- Slice the cookie dough.
- Spread it out in your hand into a thin but not breakable disk.
- Wrap it around your chosen cookie and add more dough if needed to cover the whole thing. (Trust us, you need way less dough than you'd think. If you use too much, it'll spread all over the cookie sheet.)
- Put it in the oven and cook it slightly longer than the directions on the package, at the recommended temperature.
- Remove from oven, cool and devour. But also, save some for Santa.
