"Lost River" has become an especially apt title for Ryan Gosling's directorial debut, seeing as the movie has floated off into the Hollywood abyss. According to Variety, "Lost River" will forgo a theatrical release, a decision that one can assume has something to do with the atrocious reception it received at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
Warner Bros. will instead release "Lost River" via on-demand services in April. Originally titled "How to Catch a Monster," the movie follows a desperate single mother (Christina Hendricks) who finds work at a lurid fantasy-fulfillment nightclub and her teenage son (Iain De Caestecker) who discovers a secret underwater town. Matt Smith, Saoirse Ronan and Eva Mendes also star. Many compared "Lost River" to the work of David Lynch and Gosling collaborator Nicolas Winding Refn ("Drive," "Only God Forgives"), and not always in flattering terms.
At Cannes, Warner Bros. reportedly met with specialty distributors about acquiring and releasing the film instead. Deadline.com insisted in its report that Warner Bros.' move was out of the best interest for "Gosling and the movie he worked so hard on."
UPDATE: Variety reports that "Lost River" will receive a limited release in New York and Los Angeles in the early second quarter of 2015.
