Michael Sam confirmed reports he'd gotten engaged to longtime boyfriend Vito Cammissano in a Jan. 16 tweet.

Sam, who made history in 2014 as the first openly gay man drafted by the NFL, tweeted on image of himself dropping to one knee in front of Cammissano atop St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City.

Cammissano responded with a separate tweet of his own:

The location's significance didn't gone unnoticed by TMZ. Given that the Catholic church is opposed to same-sex marriage, the news outlet deemed the proposal "an act of defiance."

Earlier this month, Page Six and TMZ reported that Sam and Cammisano had gotten engaged during a visit to Europe, where they'd been vacationing since Dec. 30.

As news of Sam's NFL draft broke last year, the pair made headlines when they shared a passionate kiss that was nationally broadcast by ESPN and other media outlets.

In an interview with Oprah Winfrey that aired last month, Sam said he hoped to marry Cammisano someday.

"I think if someone wants to spend the rest of their lives with another person, by all means, do that," Sam said. "It's all about equality."

Congrats, gentlemen!
