A woman who attempted to board a plane with three puppies and two dogs allegedly drowned one of the puppies in an airport toilet.
Cynthia V. Anderson, 56, was arrested Friday on animal abuse charges after allegedly killing a young Doberman in a public bathroom in the Central Nebraska Regional Airport in Grand Island.
Police said Anderson showed up at the airport on Thursday with the five dogs and hoped to return to her home in Clearwater, Florida. She was denied entry on the plane because the puppies were less than two weeks old, the Grand Island Independent reports, and federal aviation rules state dogs must be at least eight weeks old to fly.
Anderson came back to the airport the next day with the two older dogs in the proper kennels, but was spotted trying tosneak a puppy in her carry-on luggage, according to Newser.com.
Witnesses told police they saw Anderson enter an airport bathroom with the puppy but leave without it. A dead puppy was found in the toilet by another passenger, CBS Miami reports, and Anderson was prevented from traveling.
An autopsy of the puppy conducted by the Central Nebraska Humane Society determined drowning was the cause of death, according to the Associated Press.
The Humane Society has taken the other puppies away from Anderson's parents, according to the Orlando Sentinel.
The paper reports that Anderson has a criminal record in Volusia County, Florida, dating back to 2010, that includes charges of retail theft, grand theft, battery and trespassing.
Anderson is currently held in Hall County Jail on charges of animal abuse.
