Karlie Harman throws like a girl, and she's proud of it.
“[People] have said that I throw like a girl. And in a way, I take that as a compliment, because yeah, I throw like a girl because I am a girl. I throw [the ball] with power and dedication,” she says in a new video by Always, the feminine products company.
The 15-year-old is the starting quarterback for Dulles South Thunder, a youth football team in Virginia. The squad’s only female player, Harman’s been a trailblazer for young female athletes since she joined the team in 2013.
Her coach, Bob Thomas, who’s coached NFL players in his time, told the Washington Post last year that the teen is “one of the greatest athletes” he’s ever worked with.
And about those haters?
“A lot of people think, ‘Oh, she’s a girl, she can’t tackle, or she can’t play.’ So, it really just makes me get more pumped to really show them what I can do,” Harman told WJLA in October. “It didn’t really occur to me that it was [all] boys. It’s just a sport that I love.”
Harman is one of the faces of Always’ new Like A Girl campaign, which seeks to remind young women that “doing it #LikeAGirl is an awesome thing.”
The teen -- who was named Player of the Year from Dulles South Youth Sports for the fall 2013 season, a first for a female quarterback -- told ESPN that she wants to re-appropriate the term “throws like a girl.”
"I want to reclaim it. I want it to be a positive thing," she said.
