On This Day In 2007, Obama Made A Move That Would Change History

On Feb. 10, 2007, then-Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) announced his 2008 White House presidential bid, which ultimately led to him becoming the first African-American president of the United States.

While speaking at the Old State Capitol in Springfield, Illinois, Obama said, "I recognize there is a certain presumptuousness -- a certain audacity -- to this announcement."

“I know I haven't spent a lot of time learning the ways of Washington. But I've been there long enough to know that the ways of Washington must change."

At the time of his announcement, then-Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) had already announced her presidential bid and was seen as the front-runner for the Democratic nomination, according to numerous national polls.

Obama went on to win the 2008 Democratic nomination on June 3, 2008, and was elected president of the United States that November. Obama won his re-election race against former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in November 2012.
