Federal Judge Shot During Robbery Attempt

(Adds detail on incident, background on Berg)

March 5 (Reuters) - U.S. District Judge Terrence Berg was shot in the leg in Detroit on Thursday night during an attempted robbery, the Detroit Free Press newspaper reported.

Berg was taken to a nearby hospital. Police said his condition was unknown but his injuries appeared not to be life-threatening, according to the newspaper.

Citing police, the paper said two men approached Berg around 9:10 p.m. outside his home and tried to force him inside. When Berg refused, one of the suspects fired a shot that hit the judge, before the pair fled in a car.

Police could not immediately be reached for details.

Berg was nominated to the federal bench in eastern Michigan by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the U.S. Senate in 2012, according to the court's website.

Prior to his appointment, he had served as an assistant U.S. Attorney in eastern Michigan for more than two decades. (Reporting by Ian Simpson and Curtis Skinner; Editing by Clarence Fernandez)
