'Walking Dead' Spinoff Gets Us Closer To Year-Round Zombies On AMC

"Walking Dead" fans are about to have a double serving of zombies.

AMC's spinoff of the hit zombie show was greenlit for two seasons on Monday. The first batch of six episodes will premiere in late summer with the 13-episode second season airing in 2016. The still-untitled spinoff will be a prequel set in Los Angeles, starrin Cliff Curtis (“Missing"), Kim Dickens ("Gone Girl," "House of Cards"), Frank Dillane ("Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince") and Alycia Debnam Carey ("Into the Storm").

In January, an unconfirmed leaked script of the pilot revealed that the spinoff would take place in the early days of the zombie crisis. "Walking Dead" creator Robert Kirkman has said that the new series will be "startlingly different" with all new characters and storylines, although some reports reveal that the two shows will have some crossovers. Juan G. Pareja, who played Morales in Season 1 of "The Walking Dead," tweeted a photo in January hinting that his character could return in the new show. Another report stirred rumors that a character from the spinoff would appear in Season 6 of "The Walking Dead" first, and then be introduced in the new series.

AMC president Charlie Collier called the new show a "companion series" in a press release, saying, "From the beginning of ‘The Walking Dead’ on AMC, we’ve been asked questions about what was going on in other parts of the zombie apocalypse, and what it looked like as the world really did ‘turn.’ Through this new series, we’re going to find out."

To hold fans over till more details are released, there's a new photo of the untitled spinoff featuring Curtis and Dickens:
