NGLCC President Says Hillary Clinton's LGBT Activism 'Goes Back Decades'

Business Activist Defends Hillary Clinton's History On LGBT Rights

Hillary Clinton's public push for the Supreme Court to rule in favor of national marriage equality raised questions about whether it was an act of political expediency from the woman who did not support same-sex marriage until 2013, but the head of the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce argued on HuffPost Live that Clinton has been in the corner of LGBT Americans for years.

NGLCC president Justin Nelson told host Alyona Minkovski on Thursday that he prefers to focus on Clinton's "history of LGBT rights activism that goes back decades" rather than what some call her slow evolution on marriage equality.

"If we're only gonna talk to or support people that have been with us 100 percent of the time on 100 percent of our issues, we're going to be talking to a very small group of people," Nelson said.

Nelson cited Clinton's support of LGBT rights during her time as first lady, a senator and secretary of state as signs that she is the right leader for gay Americans.

"[I] was actually with Secretary Clinton in Geneva when she gave her speech on LGBT rights as human rights, and I can tell you from being there in that room when she was talking with leaders from across the world, she meant what she said. You could tell that was from the heart," Nelson said.
