Hurricane Sandy took everything from the Rose family -- except their determination to succeed. Daria Rose applied to every Ivy League school except Columbia, and was accepted to all of them.
"I was like, 'Oh my God, I just got into Harvard,'" she told ABC7. "Then I checked Princeton, and I was like, 'Oh my God, I just got into Princeton.' And I checked Brown, I got in. It just kept going and going."
The 18-year-old of Hempstead, Long Island, lost everything when Hurricane Sandy destroyed her family's home during her sophomore year. The Roses lived in hotels and with relatives until their house was rebuilt.
In her college essay, Rose wrote about how she found solace in reading.
“My mom and my dad and my family, they made me realize what was important,” she told ABC7. “Stuff is just stuff. What is important is your health, education, your family.”
