Recycling is good for the environment, unless you're recycling the wrong things -- like pizza boxes. According to The Atlantic's CityLab, that's one thing you're going to have to throw out. The truth is in the cheese.
Darby Hoover, a senior resource specialist at the Natural Resources Defense Council, told The Atlantic that the box "ends up suffering the most from getting mixed with other materials." So all that leftover cheese grease soaking into the cardboard means the box is just not a good candidate for recycling.
While it's disappointing to throw out that darn pizza box, relieve some guilt and reduce your waste with these four tips for reusing your trash:
- Wine corks: Attach a wine cork to keys to make a floating key chain that won't sink in the ocean!
- Banana peels: Instead of tossing them, use the inside of the peels to shine your dull silverware.
- Empty pill bottles: Store Band-Aids in them to prevent crushing or wrinkling.
- Cardboard: when you can't recycle it, use it as a fire starter in lieu of messy newspapers.
