  • 1 Why Do So Many Bi Women Smoke Pot?
Previously, scientists found that 38% of bi women smoke weed, compared to 20% of lesbians and 5% of straight women. What gives? A new study looked into why and found that pot is being used as a mental health resource to deal with fear, anxiety, pain, stress and biphobia -- all things that most bi women face by the basketload. Isn’t it really time for biphobia to die?
  • 2 Miley Cyrus Planning to Launch Virtual Support Groups for LGBT Youth
Isolation is one of the reasons 41% of trans people attempt suicide. Well, huge kudos to Miley Cyrus for launching her Happy Hippie Foundation this week supporting homeless and LGBT youth. What’s one of the projects they’re raising money for first? Virtual support groups for LGB and especially gender nonconforming or trans youth. $15 will support one youth for a year -- donate here.
  • 3 New York Times Calls for Trans Data Collection on Census
We’re really in love with the New York Times this week as they launched a bold oped calling for better treatment of trans people, and even trans data collection on the U.S. Census. Also, head here see their handy list of resources and organizations. Be sure to check out the health section.
  • 4 Why Cancer is Harder for Us
A new report looked in to LGBT patients’ experiences to find out why they have worse experiences with cancer than other people. Main reasons? Stress from disclosing their sexual orientation to health care facilities and discrimination from health care providers. Dear American Cancer Society (ACS), cancer doctors (ASCO), National Cancer Institute (NCI) all departments of health, and every other group that works on cancer: can we please fix this now?
  • 5 Eating Disorder Rates Four Times Higher for Trans Folks
It turns out eating disorders are much more common for trans folks than for everyone else -- including other queer people. A new study among college students found that 16% of transgender people had been diagnosed with an eating disorder in the past year, compared to less than 4% for both cisgender queer people and cisgender heterosexuals. Uh oh, stress rears its head on our health again.
  • 6 Top Hospital Racing to become a Trans Healthcare Hub

Up until last month New York State’s Medicaid program wouldn’t pay for gender reassignment surgery and NYC didn’t have any gender reassignment surgery specialists. That’s changing. Mount Sinai Beth Israel hospital already has one of our friends, Dr. Barbara Warren, as its Director of LGBT Health Services. Now they are also recruiting surgeons and building a comprehensive trans health care program as well. Great job!
