A man accused of kidnapping and raping a 15-year-old girl told arresting officers Thursday, "I'm the guy you're looking for."

Russell Wayne Deviney, 48, allegedly abducted the victim in the Fresno suburb of Sanger, California, on Saturday, after the two exchanged messages online, according to KMPH. Deviney, a Washington state resident, reportedly fled with the girl to Oregon, but a few slip-ups allowed the victim to escape and call 911 from a McDonald's on Monday.

Deviney made a pitstop at the Astoria fast-food restaurant for a few hours, KATU reports. At some point, police say, he got out of his truck and walked away, giving the captured girl enough time to run inside the McDonald's and call for help. She was put in protective custody until her parents arrived from California to retrieve her.

The suspect was on the run for several more days, but left behind a trail of witnesses that led to his capture on Thursday. A bartender called 911 Tuesday to report that Deviney had been eating clam chowder and chugging Mountain Dew in Seaside, Oregon, according to the New York Daily News. The bartender identified him from seeing a wanted poster, but didn't make the connection until after he left.

Two days later, a couple reported seeing him on a beach about 8 miles south of Seaside, according to KATU. He was arrested around 11 a.m.

An affidavit alleges that Deviney raped the victim four times on the drive from Sanger to Seaside, and took naked photos of her on his cell phone, KING 5 reports. The girl told authorities that she left her home Saturday thinking she was meeting up with the person Deviney had posed as online, an 18-year-old named JR.

KING 5 reports:

"Once she realized the person she was meeting actually was a 48-year-old man, she was already in the vehicle and under Deviney's control," Astoria Deputy Chief Eric Halverson said. "The investigation indicates that the girl's phone was disabled by Deviney and she was able to surreptitiously send a message to her mother at one point."

The girl had a medical evaluation and is safe.

Deviney has been charged with kidnapping, rape, child sex abuse, unlawful sexual penetration, sodomy and coercion.
