44 Injured, 12 Killed In Chicago Shootings During Memorial Day Weekend

Gun violence ripped through Chicago this Memorial Day weekend as more than 50 people were shot, leading to a dozen deaths.

Among those caught in the carnage was 4-year-old Jacele Johnson, who was shot in the head Friday night outside a graduation and prom party, the Chicago Tribune reported. The girl was in critical condition Saturday but upgraded to fair condition Monday.

"She’s opening her eyes," the girl's mother, Trennetta Gresham, told the Tribune on Saturday. "She’s kicking her legs, but right now she’s still critical."

A 17-year-old boy and 15-year-old girl also suffered gunshot wounds during the incident.

At least two of the weekend's homicide victims were teenagers, ages 17 and 19, WGN reported. The 17-year-old was shot in the leg and back and later died at the hospital.

Memorial Day weekend has notoriously been a time of violence in recent years. Last year, six people died and at least 22 others were injured in Chicago shootings during the holiday weekend. Over Memorial Day weekend in 2012, Chicago saw 11 dead and more than 40 others injured.

In Baltimore this past weekend, nine people were killed and 26 others were injured.

With a total of 133 homicides through mid-May this year, Chicago has seen 19 more than in the same time period last year, according to The Associated Press.
