According to New York Magazine, the origins of the burger can be traced back to the 13th century, from which it evolved through many iterations. From raw mutton to plated beef, the dish has had quite a journey to its starring role in the American backyard barbecue. Interestingly, we can thank White Castle for the hamburger bun.
