Here's How To Make A Classic Margarita, Because It's A Fundamental Life Skill

Margaritas are like opinions. Everyone has one that they consider to be the best.

To truly find your favorite, there's a whole ridiculous world of margaritas to be guzzled. You can try tame flavors like strawberry or mango, or you can go batsh*t crazy with a chocolate marg or even -- shudder -- one made with Sour Patch Kids. Maybe you like yours salted. Maybe you like it frozen. Or maybe you prefer to waste away with Jimmy Buffett and his Margaritaville machine. Any way you like it, the road to finding your ultimate margarita can be a long one. And it should start with the classic.

The origin of the margarita is fuzzy, just like its imbibers. But the basic recipe couldn't get much simpler, calling for tequila, fresh lime juice and Cointreau, shaken up and served ice cold. So take a look at our video above, and then try your hand at this simple drink.

Once you master that, THEN you can start squirting in sriracha and throwing in the bacon. We won't have your back on that, but godspeed.

Classic Margarita
serves 2
2 ounces silver tequila
1 ounce fresh lime juice
1 ounce Cointreau
Salt (for rimming glass)
Ice (for shaking)
Lime slices (optional, for garnish)

  1. If you want to rim your glass with salt, first rub a slice of lime around the edge of the glass, then dip the rim of the glass into a plate that's been coated with salt.
  2. Pour tequila, lime juice and Cointreau in a shaker with ice. Shake until the outside of the shaker develops a light frost, and then strain into a margarita glass. Garnish as desired.
