The American woman is competitive, diligent and never gives up -- basically, she's a straight-up badass.
A new Nike commercial puts that badassery on full display, starring the women of the U.S. National Soccer Team who triumphed over Japan in the finals of the World Cup on Sunday night.
The ad was released at the beginning of June to celebrate the kick-off of the Women's World Cup, but now that these incredible athletes are finally getting the attention (though still not the financial compensation) they deserve, the Nike spot feels more relevant than ever.
The commercial is part of Nike's #NoMaybes campaign and features players from the U.S. National Team including Sydney Leroux, Abby Wambach, Carli Lloyd, Alex Morgan, Christen Press and Megan Rapinoe. The one-minute clip shows the national team running sprints, head-butting balls, kicking goals and overcoming exhaustion -- all to the tune of "American Woman" by The Guess Who.
The ad also features young female female players training and playing soccer just as hard as the U.S. national players, and helping pump each other up along the way. "Strong alone. Unstoppable together," the screen reads at the end of the spot.
“You have to have a team mentality with the competitiveness of the individual,” team captain Abby Wambach said in a press release. “You want to make sure that everyone around you has the same mentality and then enmesh those individualities. We are masters of controlling ourselves and bringing out the best in each other.”
All that hard work definitely paid off on the field. Way to be unstoppable.
