What Made Dave Coulier Especially Sad About The Cancellation Of 'Full House'

By the time it went off the air in 1995, "Full House" had been a family favorite across the country for the better part of a decade. Each week, fans tuned in to follow the lives of widower Danny Tanner and his family, and watched the three Tanner girls (played by Candace Cameron Bure, Jodie Sweetin and twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen) grow up. The show's end was a bittersweet one, but the fans weren't the only ones sad to see "Full House" end its popular run.

Dave Coulier played the comedic Uncle Joey on the show and, as he tells "Oprah: Where Are They Now -- Extra" in the above video, he wasn't completely ready to say goodbye to "Full House" all those years ago.

"I could have gone a couple of other seasons," he says. "And there was talk about that, of going to another network that wanted to pick us up for two more seasons."

So, why didn't that network move come to fruition in 1995? "Everybody just kind of disbanded," Coulier says. "It was like, 'Man, we just did 192 of these [episodes]. That's a lot.'"

Still, the actor, who recently signed on for the upcoming Netflix revival "Fuller House," knew the end of that original series also meant walking away from the show that had become his home and the cast members that had become his dear friends.

"I was sad because I thought, 'Here are some of my closest friends on the planet, and we've been together almost nine years. This is all going to stop,'" Coulier says. "I was really sad about that."

It's been 20 years since the final "Full House" episode aired, but those friendships Coulier speaks of didn't actually end with the show. He is especially close with co-stars Bob Saget and John Stamos, both of whom attended Coulier's 2014 wedding.

"We've continued to be friends. We're like a real dysfunctional family off-camera, as well," he jokes. "So, it's worked out great. I really do think of them as family."

"Oprah: Where Are They Now -- Extra" is a digital series from the OWN show "Oprah: Where Are They Now?"
