Shooting Reported At Union Station Near Capitol Hill

A security guard shot a man in Union Station in Washington, D.C., on Friday afternoon, the city's Metropolitan Police Department said.

Authorities said that the man stabbed a woman, and a security guard witnessed the incident and chased after the suspect.

"The suspect armed with a knife turned and accosted the security guard. The armed security guard fired at the suspect and struck the suspect," the department said. "The original offense appears to be domestic in nature."

The officer was a private security guard associated with the Securities and Exchange Commission, across the street from Union Station. Police said that both the man and woman's injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening, and their identities have not been released.

Police tweeted at 1:05 p.m. on Friday that there was not an active shooter on the scene.

There were reports of heavy police presence in the area, with helicopters flying overhead. "I saw people running, and I just started running. It sounded like it was right next to me," said Ursula Lauriston. She said she was in line at Jamba Juice when the gunfire rang out.

Social media posts showed people fleeing, though reporters on the scene at around 1:15 p.m. said on Twitter that Union Station was open to the public. A McDonald’s inside the station was roped off as part of an investigation.

The shooting occurred during the busy lunch hour, and as flagpoles outside the station stood at half-staff in remembrance of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. D.C. Police Commander Jeff Brown said the incident had nothing to do with the anniversary.

The Senate Sergeant at Arms tweeted at 1:22 that police activity at the station had concluded.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
