Politicians React To Speaker John Boehner's Resignation

Reflections on the Ohio lawmaker's legacy.

Reactions came swiftly and bluntly after the office of House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) announced Friday that the lawmaker would resign from Congress at the end of October.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), a GOP presidential candidate, relayed news of the resignation to the crowd at the Value Voters Summit in Washington, D.C.

“Just a few minutes ago, Speaker Boehner announced that he will be resigning,” Rubio said. The conservative crowd erupted in applause.

"With all due respect to people who serve in government, it is important at this moment, with respect to him and the service he has provided to our country, it’s not about him, and I’m not here today to bash anyone, but the time has come to turn the page."

Other politicians reflected positively on Boehner's legacy.

"Speaker Boehner was able to transform a broken and dispirited Republican minority into the largest Republican majority since the 1920s," Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said in a statement. “That’s a legacy few can match."
