Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton may have broken up almost a year ago, but the actress is hopeful that their relationship will remain "something very precious."

In an interview with Red magazine, the 49-year-old opened up about her 13-year romance with Burton, saying nothing but positive things about him and their relationship.

"I could write a thesis on what's happened and it is all-absorbing when a relationship breaks down, but I think we're coming through it," Carter said. "I think we'll have something very precious still."

The pair, who share two children -- son Billy, 12, and daughter Nell, 7 -- separated on good terms last December.

"Our relationship was always somewhat special, and I think it'll always remain special. We did find each other," she told the magazine. "And really, the mark of a successful relationship shouldn't be whether you're there forever after. Sometimes you're not meant to be forever together."

If only we could be this hopeful about all our exes ...
