Despite not being penalized at the time, New York Giants’ standout wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has reportedly been fined just less than $9,000 for his on-field actions against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.
Buffalo players complained after the game that Beckham had thrown multiple punches in the fourth period. Bills linebacker Preston Brown went so far as to say Beckham would “get away with it” scot-free because of his “golden boy” status with league officials.
While New York coach Tom Coughlin explained Beckham’s actions by calling him “emotional,” Bills cornerback Stephon Gilmore interpreted Beckham's behavior in a less favorable light, deeming him a “prima donna” and equating his antics to “throwing a tantrum.”
On the first play in question, Beckham and Brown seem to go tit for tat, exchanging shoves after an Eli Manning fumble. No visible punches yet.
It isn’t until three plays later that anything resembling a punch can be seen. After a bump from Buffalo safety Duke Williams sends Beckham tumbling to the ground, Beckham gets up and delivers a blow to Williams’ face mask, prompting a second push from the Bill.
Beckham said after practice on Wednesday that he plans to appeal the $8,681 fine.
"I get punched every single game," Beckham continued. "I get hit in my face every single game. These are grown men out here. I don't think anybody should be talking about what happened after they lost a game."
