Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth may have split in 2013, but their love lives on -- in magazines, at least.

In a new interview with Men's Fitness, Hemsworth talks about his "free spirit" ex-fiancée, who he dated for five years.

"You fall in love with who you fall in love with; you can never choose. I guess some people just come with a little more baggage," said Hemsworth. "I mean, look -- we were together five years, so I don't think those feelings will ever change. And that's good because that proves to me that it was real. It wasn't just a fling. It really was an important part of my life and always will be."

The couple broke off their engagement nearly two years ago, but the actor still has kind things to say about his ex.

"She's a free spirit," said Hemsworth to Men's Fitness in the understatement of the year. "I think she'll always surprise people with what she does, but she's not a malicious person in any way. She's a young girl who wants to do what she wants to do."

Cyrus and Hemsworth first met while filming "The Last Song" together in 2009 and got engaged May 31, 2012. Cyrus went on to date USC college student Patrick Schwarzenegger, though the two ended things earlier this year.
