Amal Clooney Explains Why She Doesn't See Herself As A Celebrity

The human rights lawyer is, of course, married to actor George Clooney.

Human rights lawyer Amal Clooney discussed her unique relationship with fame during a Friday morning interview with NBC.

"I think it's wonderful celebrities would choose to spend their time or energy or the spotlight that they have to raise awareness about these causes," said Clooney, in her first-ever American television interview. "I don't really see myself in the same way because I'm still doing the same job that I used to do before. So if there's more attention paid, for whatever reason, to that, then I think that's good."

Amal, who wed George Clooney in 2014, became a household name after she reportedly began dating the actor in 2013.

The internationally acclaimed lawyer has managed to keep her newfound celebrity status at a distance, and has no problem correcting people who annoy her with entertainment questions on the job.

In early 2015, Clooney famously shut down a reporter who asked her a fashion question while she appeared before the European Court of Human Rights. Amal told the court she was "wearing Ede & Ravenscroft," aka the tailors who make her legal robes. Mic drop, anyone?

Currently, she is representing former Maldives president Mohamed Nasheed, who she says was wrongly imprisoned. In a letter published in The Huffington Post last year, Amal called for Nasheed's release and talked about the ongoing crisis in the Maldives.

"President Nasheed's arbitrary imprisonment is not an isolated case," wrote Amal. "It is emblematic of a broader state of repression in the Maldives today, where every opposition leader is either imprisoned or facing charges or intimidation by the government. The Maldives is now a place where 1,700 people face charges for peaceful political protest or speech, and where journalists have been assaulted, arrested or disappeared."
