This Is Why You Feel The Burn When You Drink Alcohol

"It's not the booze that's hot. It's you."

Feel the fire when you drink shots?

Don't blame the booze. It's your body's vanilloid type 1 receptor, or vr1, that's causing the burn, according to a new video (above) released by the YouTube series SciShow on Monday.

The vr1 receptors detect heat, and ethanol makes them more sensitive.

"Normally your vr1 receptors activate at 42 degrees Celsius," SciShow host Hank Green says in the video. "But ethanol lowers that threshold to just 34 degrees. And your body temperature? That's around 37 degrees. So, suddenly your normal body temperature feels like it's burning you."

Basically, that means you could look like this guy:

Green summed up the reaction thusly: "It's not the booze that's hot. It's you."

Now who's ready for another round?
