Thousands of people wasted time signing a petition in an attempt to stop Kanye West from recording a David Bowie tribute album because the whole thing was made up to begin with.

Gossip publication the Daily Star cited an unnamed source who described the fictitious album as including a variety of covers: "Some are straightforward cover versions with Kanye actually singing. On others he is rapping with his own lyrics over Bowie's music."

A petition launched on 38 Degrees called the possibility of a West-Bowie album "a sacrilege."

David Bowie was one of the single most important musicians of the 20th and 21st century, it would be a sacrilege to let it be ruined by Kanye West.

The petition, which has since garnered more than 10,000 signatures, is all for naught because West never planned on recording a tribute album anyway. His rep shut down the bogus claim while speaking with TMZ.

After Bowie's death last week, the rapper paid his respects on Twitter, commending the late singer for his contribution to the music industry.
