12 Things Not To Do On A Date With A Latina (Or Ever, Really)

Stop! In the name of love.

Dating is hard enough as it is without adding played out stereotypes and lame one-liners to the mix.

Though there aren’t any hard and fast rules for how to date a Latina (or any woman, for that matter), there are certainly things many women would prefer not to hear on a date -- or ever.

If you’re not sure what these things are, you needn’t worry. We’ve put together a quick and easy list, complete with GIFs, to help you out. Consider them our Valentine’s gift to you.

So, when on out on a date with a Latina, please do not:

1
Ask her where she's "REALLY" from.
Especially when she already told you that she’s from somewhere in the United States.
2
Tell her she doesn't "look Latina."
If she’s Latina, then guess what? She looks Latina.
3
Ask her to say something to you in Spanish.
Stop assuming all Latinas speak Spanish. Perhaps English is her first and only language, or maybe her family speaks Portuguese. Either way, don't ask her to whip out her language skills like they're some sort of party trick.
4
Call her Spanish.
That is, unless she’s from Spain. And even then, you should probably just stick to calling her by her name.
5
Use the word "caliente" to describe her.
Not cool. Not. Cool.
6
Or the word "spicy" for that matter.
Unless you're talking about food. And even then, please don't assume she likes spicy food.
7
Mention the other Latinas you've dated or have liked.
And you're telling her this why?
8
Ask her to call you "papi."
If she wants to call you "papi," she will do so on her own accord. You needn't ask.
9
Call her "mami."
If she hasn't called you "papi," you don't get to call her "mami." Follow her lead.
10
Compare her to Eva Mendes, Gina Rodriguez, or any other famous Latina.
Not that these ladies aren’t lovely, but you’re probably better off not comparing her to anyone. She’s her own person.
11
Blame her "fiery temper" for anything.
Maybe she doesn't have a fiery temper. Maybe she's just tired of being subjected to tired ole stereotypes. Ever think of that?
12
Assume ANYTHING about her.
She's an individual, not a caricature or a stereotype. Ask her questions, and get to know (and possibly fall in love with) the real her. Just an idea.
