Jamie Foxx says actors need to "act better" if they want to get Oscar attention.
The star took to the stage at the American Black Film Festival on Sunday at The Beverly Hilton Hotel and broached the subject of the #OscarsSoWhite controversy.
“All these Oscar talks, I don’t even trip about that,” he said, according to Us Weekly. “I mean, what’s the big deal? I was sitting at home with my Oscar, like ‘What’s all the hubbub?' ... My friend said, ‘Are you mad?’ ‘Um, kind of, but not really. I started calling Denzel [Washington], and we just Instagrammed our Oscars together.”
Fox won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2005 for his starring role in "Ray." Washington has two Oscars: Best Supporting Actor for "Glory" in 1989 and Best Actor for "Training Day" in 2001.
Foxx joked about the hashtags #WhatsTheBigDeal? and #ActBetter before saying that it's about opportunity to act, not awards.
"If you turn the camera on and say ‘OK ... win an award ... and action,’ we'll all have taken, like, 10 steps back. It's all about the art. Who cares about anything else?”
A host of celebrities, including Will Smith, Spike Lee and Michael Moore, have said they will boycott this year's Oscars because of the lack of diversity among nominees.
"We're part of this community but at this current time, we're uncomfortable to stand there and say that this is OK," Smith said about his and wife Jada Pinkett Smith's decision to not attend the 2016 event. Smith was snubbed a nomination for his role in "Concussion."
