A mother picking up her children from school was shot to death Thursday in Maryland by her estranged husband, who also wounded a man who intervened, police said.

Gladys Tordil, 44, was gunned down outside High Point High School in Beltsville, hours after school was dismissed. Police said the gunman was her estranged husband, Eulalio Tordil, 62, an employee of the Federal Protective Service.

Tordil escaped after the shooting and was on the loose. Police asked anyone who can help locate him to call 911.

The bystander who intervened was taken to a hospital with injuries police said were non-life threatening. Police didn't release his name.

Police said they believe Tordil followed his estranged wife to the school and confronted her outside the building. She was shot multiple times inside her SUV, where police found her dead, authorities said.

Earlier, police noted on Twitter that the shooting appeared to be a “domestic incident.”

This article has been updated to identify the victim and the charges against the man police allege is the gunman.
