How Newspapers Responded To Donald Trump's Historic Night

From hope to disappointment.

The top story in most major newspapers on Friday was Donald Trump officially accepting the Republican nomination at the party’s convention in Cleveland the night before.

Some publications, like The New York Times, put any criticism below large, neutral headlines. Others ― The Washington Post, for example, which called his message “ominous” ― pointed out how dark Trump’s speech was.

“Our convention occurs at a moment of crisis for our nation. The attacks on our police, and the terrorism in our cities, threaten our very way of life,” Trump said during his lengthy address. “Any politician who does not grasp this danger is not fit to lead our country.”

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims ― 1.6 billion members of an entire religion ― from entering the U.S.
