Michelle Obama’s speech at the Democratic National Convention on Monday night elicited a variety of passionate responses on social media (yaaaaaas, #Michelle2024, Google searches for anti-aging formula), as well as the now routine racist vitriol we’ve come to expect whenever an Obama takes the floor.
Kelly Clarkson, however, was having NONE OF IT when she spotted a clueless response to her tweet celebrating Obama’s moment on stage. The Twitter user in question, who has since deleted their account, took particular issue with the first lady’s mention of America’s legacy of slavery, one Obama has acutely felt living in The White House over the past eight years.
“I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves,” Obama said. “And I watch my daughters, two beautiful and intelligent black young women, playing with their dogs on the White House lawn.”
“I’m not sure I liked that part where [Michelle Obama] said the White House was built by slaves,” Clarkson’s follower wrote.
The “American Idol” winner could have easily ignored the response, but chose to instead address his ignorance in a perfectly crafted tweet.
Clarkson, who initially endorsed Ron Paul for the presidency in 2012, has since lent her support to the Obamas. If you remember, she performed a rousing rendition of “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” at the president’s 2013 inauguration in front of the capital building.
“I’ve been reading online about the debates and I’m probably going to vote for Obama again,” she said in 2012. “I can’t support Romney’s policies as I have a lot of gay friends and I don’t think it’s fair they can’t get married.”
“Obama is a great guy,” she added. “I’ve met him and I’m a fan of Michelle, too.”
